\u201cI like formatting <\/a>references!\u201d Said no researcher ever. Formatting the reference list is a mind-numbing task. Unfortunately, without correctly formatted references<\/a>, readers can\u2019t track down the sources you\u2019ve cited in your research paper when they\u2019re looking for further information or want to verify your claims. So it\u2019s worth learning the basics of reference formatting for the most popular style guides<\/a>. If you\u2019re working in the physical sciences and engineering, here\u2019s a handy guide to formatting the reference list in IEEE style<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing References in the Text in IEEE Style<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve covered this in an earlier post<\/a>, but here\u2019s a quick recap:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. In-text citations are Arabic numbers enclosed in square brackets and aren\u2019t superscripted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. They can be placed anywhere in the sentence, not necessarily the end.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. No en dashes for citation ranges: \u201c[1], [2], [3], [4]\u201d is okay but \u201c[1-4]\u201d is not.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Use \u201cet al.\u201d if needed for in-text citations with 3 or more authors.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Formatting the IEEE Reference List<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Before we jump into different types of references<\/a>, you need to know the basics of the reference list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    1. Reference list is ordered according to order in which citations are mentioned in the main text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Never combine references. Abbreviations like \u201cibid\u201d and \u201cop cit\u201d aren\u2019t allowed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Initials of authors or editors are used, not full first or middle names.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. References are numbered in square brackets, set flush left and hanging out beyond the body of references.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. All references end with a period, except those ending with URLs. Use a period after DOIs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    6. If you\u2019re referencing an IEEE publication, list all author names up to 6 authors. For 7 or more authors, use the first author followed by \u201cet al.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      IEEE Reference List Abbreviations <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      To save space in the reference list, some common words are abbreviated when they appear in the name of a journal or publisher. They\u2019re not abbreviated in the title <\/em>of a book or chapter or article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Annual = Annu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Annals = Ann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Proceedings = Proc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Transactions = Trans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Applied, Applications = Appl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Physics = Phys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Letters = Lett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Engineering = Eng.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Automatic = Autom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      University = Univ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Africa, African = Afr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Artificial = Artif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Australia = Aust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Computers, Computing, Computational = Comput.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Conference = Conf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Formatting References to Book Chapters in IEEE Style<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      I. I. Author, \u201cTitle of chapter in the book,\u201d in Title of Published Book<\/em>, xth ed. City of Publisher, (only U.S. State), Country: Abbrev. of Publisher, year, ch. x, sec. x, pp. xxx\u2013xxx.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
