In quantitative social sciences research, you have perhaps 1-2 direct quotes in an entire paper (excluding participant transcripts in qualitative research). In STEM fields, you can have an entire paper without direct quotes. Always paraphrase first and reserve direct quotes only when it’s essential to preserve the original wording.

Forgetting to cite the original source

This is probably the most common mistake made by new researchers. No matter how drastically you paraphrase a source, you still have to give the original author credit. The only exception is for widely known information, like the date WWII began.
